Our Little Prince At The Castle

On Wednesday Max woke up from his nap around 1:30 with a 102.4 temp and had very labored breathing. He also had a rash on his face that had started at the beginning of the week. He is getting teeth, eating new foods and has sensitive skin so it was hard with no real baseline for him to know what was going on. I thought I should check with our pediatrician just to make sure they didn't want to see him. The transferred me to the nurse and as he heard about his breathing they told me to take him to the ER. I called Eric to run it by him and he consulted with a Dr he works with and called back and said yes we better get him in. Eric said he would meet me there. So we bundled up and headed out the door. On the way Max threw up twice so we turned around to get cleaned up and new clothes on and then made our way back in the van to the emergency room.
I had given him ibuprofen so by the time he was in the ER and they were monitoring him his fever came down and his breathing had stabilized. They thought the rash was a viral infection. They did blood work and found out quite a few of his levels were off and it indicated that he had some type of bacterial infection.
<span class=
The rash was spreading and so they called in the pediatrician. The pediatrician said it wasn't really rash but was Petechiae which are flat red dots on the skin that don't fade when pressure is applied. The dots represent bleeding from the capillaries, leaving small, temporary blood blisters in the skin. This is a symptom of a pretty serious infection so they admitted him to the hospital and started treating him pretty aggressively with antibiotics.
<span class=
So were admitted to the Children's Hospital, the castle on Wednesday. Not the castle we wanted our little prince to visit but we are thankful for amazing doctors and an amazing Children's Hospital in our own town.
Eric had stayed with Max at the ER while I got the other 3 kids settled for the evening. It was hard for me to leave our little man but it was better Eric was there through the procedures and beginning possible diagnosis because I would have been a train wreck. They had done a couple blood draws and tried to get an IV in 3 times in the ER but failed so finally gave him 3 shots of antibiotic to get it in his system. When I got to the hospital Max was pretty traumatized and the night was just beginning. He reached out his little arms to me and as I held him he just kept kissing me. It was the sweetest moment ever amidst the storm. It felt so good to know he knows his mommy.
The poor little guy had a rough night. Eric told me to stay in his room while he took Max to the procedure room for an IV. He knew what the ER had been like and knew I would be a wreck watching them try to get an IV started. He was right, I was a wreck down the hall in his room as I heard him wailing down the hall. Finally an hour and half later, 5 nurses and 10 attempts they had an IV in. The poor thing was a wreck. His hair was drenched with sweat and there was blood all over. Eric said the hardest things was when he would look at him with those big brown eyes like "daddy, why are you letting them do this to me, just hold me!" We have worked so hard on attachment and wanting Max to feel safe and know we will love and protect him and meet his needs. Eric said he never felt so helpless as he kept looking into his eyes like "daddy just help me!"
<span class=
Max's little spots spread to his arms, his legs, some on his back and chest. We knew if it was the serious infection they were worried about that he would more than likely take a turn for the worse in the next hours and something would grow on his culture.
<span class=
Max was so traumatized by Wednesday night that when any one with a gown and mask would walk in he would freak out. Forget trying to get his vitals ... if they touched him he would get so upset. They never got a blood pressure the rest of his stay because he would get so worked up when they tried. The Dr should be fun from here on out!
<span class=
This sweet nurse was trying to make friends with him before giving him a bath. He wasn't quite sure about her.
<span class=
As you can see his attitude towards his nurses was pretty much "Don't Touch Me!"
<span class=
He was so cute when he realized he had an ID bracelet on his leg. He though he had to hold his foot in the air. He held it there for about 10 minutes before he finally got over it and put it back on the bed.
<span class=
We waited for the next 36 hours to pass to see if anything grew on his blood culture. In the meantime Max started perking up. Mr Curious wasn't so curious but loved his Curious George monkey he got from some of our friends.
<span class=
My parents came to see Max and pick our other 3 up from school and bring them to visit Max. He was very excited when the kids came to visit!
<span class=
I think the kids were pretty excited to visit the castle too! Shane thought all the new toys were pretty cool!
<span class=
Max loved all the attention from his sisters and brother.
<span class=
Max's bed quickly turned into a "toy store!" They were wonderful about rotating toys in and out for him to keep him occupied.
<span class=
Even with all the fun toys it just isn't fun being sick!
<span class=
He came up with new ways to keep himself occupied like playing the piano with his feet.
<span class=
The first day Max didn't realize he could move with the splint on his arm to keep his arm straight for his IV. By day two the little man was on the move. We spent most of the day getting tangled and untangled in his IV line.
<span class=
On Friday late afternoon we got word that nothing had grown on his culture and the new blood work they had done showed that his levels were coming down so the antibiotics were doing the trick. They sent us home with oral antibiotics.
We are so thankful for the prayers and God's healing hand on our little man. We are thankful nothing grew on the culture but it is a little unsettling not knowing what was going on in his body and why it manifested itself with the Petechiae spots. We are thankful his spots are beginning to fade and he is on the mend! We will follow up with our Pediatrician in a week!

One Month Ago Today

One month ago today a little boy walked off the elevator with his orphanage teacher and was placed in our arms. I have no words to describe what it felt like to hold our baby in my arms for the first time. I felt instantly that our hearts were knit together and I knew God had hand picked this little boy to be part of our family. The emotions are still overwhelming as I think of that day.
<span class=
Within hours of having him in our arms we saw our little boy blossom before our eyes.

We learned very quickly that this little boy was a Curious George and loved exploring this new world that had been opened to him.
'<span class=
We also found out very quickly that he was Mr. Personality. He cracked us up from day one. We knew this little boy had so much life in him.
<span class=
We had an amazing time experiencing China and falling in love with our son's birth country.
_<span class=
As good as our time away was we couldn't wait to get home to our other 3 and become a family of 6. It was so fun to see Max with the kids. He fits, he's a McDonald! God knew exactly what he was doing when he placed this little boy in our family.
Max has experienced so much since he has been home. There were so many new faces, new things to see, new smells .... more big firsts for him. He also has experienced not so fun things like the dreaded car seat, blood draws, shots and GI tests at the doctor. We are so grateful all his labs and his GI tests have come back with normal results.
<span class=
He has experience bath time with is brother. This is Shane's favorite part of the day. He finally has someone to take a bath with.
<span class=
He has figured out how to go up and down steps. He still is working on how to turn around for the decent when he gets all the way to the top.
<span class=
He is pulling himself up and walking around things all the time.
<span class=
He has mastered eating at the table with the rest of us. This boy loves to eat.
<span class=
He experienced the first family dinner out for his sister's birthday. Yes, we had a very successful dinner out with the 6 of us days after he was home.
<span class=
He has celebrated his first Holiday with his family.
<span class=
He loves his big sisters. Look at the way he looks at Alexa. There are always plenty of cuddles to go around.
<span class=
The kids have been teaching him how to wave, play peek a boo, pat a cake, clap, hum, work different toys and they are trying their hardest to get him to say some words.
<span class=
He is all boy .... busy, loud and loves his cars.
<span class=
He has figured out how to get into all those places that are so much fun around the house like the Tupperware cupboard.
<span class=
He has discovered the hours of fun he can have with a balloon!
<span class=
He made his big debut at school and his sister very proudly told her friends about her brother, China and Chinese New Year.
<span class=
He experienced his first Chinese New Year celebration with new friends.
<span class=
He has discovered that all his favorite toys make music and this little boy can bee bop with the best of them.
It is hard to believe that we have been home for such a short time and yet this little boy has quickly been knit right into our family. He is adored and loved!

A month ago a little boy from China was placed in our arms and forever has changed our lives and our hearts! He now knows what the love of a family feels like and what it means to be home.
Happy One Month Gotcha Day Anniversary sweet boy!

18 Months Old Today

I can't believe my baby is 18 months old today. I never would have imagined that a little boy that was placed in my arms just 3 weeks ago feels like he has been in my arms since the days he was born.

It is hard to believe that just 3 weeks ago this is what our baby knew as home.

He slept in a sea of cribs. His nannies fed him in an assembly line and he was given bottles propped in his crib. He spent his days in a red room with red carpet and laid on a red mat.

He didn't know what it felt like to be loved by a mom and dad until he was placed in our arms on January 17, 2011.

People have asked "what did it feel like the first time you held him?" I knew it could be love at first sight or it could be a love that grows over time. I know for everyone it is different but this little boy stole my heart the minute he was placed in my arms. It felt no different than the day I gave birth to my other three children when they were place in my arms.

This little boy God handpicked for our family. I sit back in awe of his perfect plan. There were joy, bumps and heart ache on our journey to this little man. Some paperwork took longer than expected, I lost my best friend tragically in a car accident and during our grief our paperwork push slowed down, there were tears and there was joy in the journey. As much as I tried to control the paperwork, the timing, the process ... it was all HIS timing and HIS plan. The very month we began praying about starting the adoption process was the month our sweet boy was born. Our paperwork was logged into China and Max's file was released in the very next batch of kids. If things had moved a little slower or a little faster we would have missed this sweet boy. AMAZING! I can't imagine life with out him.

This verse has a new meaning to us. "In all things, God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

Our hearts have been forever changed in our journey. We stand in awe of our God and his plan for our family. We have fallen in love with China and our heart breaks for the orphans we left behind. We pray that others will step out in faith to bring a little one home, pray and support other families on the journey, help those adopting financially or even sponsor a child.

Happy Chinese New Year

I met Troy and Diane on our agency forum last fall and followed them on their journey to China to get their sweet little boy Aiden. It was fun to connect with another family that was in the process of bringing home a little boy from China. To top it off they also lived in Sioux Falls. They were planning a Chinese New Year Celebration with other families that had adopted from China for the week after we got home with Max. We were hoping we would be up for celebrating with them.
<span class=
I wish I would have taken more pictures at the beginning of the night but we were busy meeting each other and getting all the kids fed. I wish I had a picture of all the kids sitting and standing around the table and eating. It was quite a crew. There were 5 other families that we met and celebrated the Chinese New Year with.
<span class=
Max was adjusting so well and made the transition to home like a champ. We felt like adjusting to life with 4 kids and throwing in a huge time change life seemed about as easy as it could be. We were excited that we felt up for getting together with other families to celebrate. The kids were very excited to put their Chinese dresses and Kung Fu outfits (that is what Shane calls it at least) on.
<span class=
Alexa and sweet Meili. Alexa was in Meili's brother's preschool class a couple years ago when his family traveled to China to bring Meili home. We followed them on their journey and I have pictures of her when they first were home with her and she came on a field trip. Meile and Shane are now in the same preschool class. Meile and her best friend Betsy have already claimed Max as their boyfriend and they have decided they are going to share him as a husband. They are so cute!
<span class=
This is Max with sweet little Peter. I think they could be brothers. Peter goes to our church so it will be fun to see them grow up together.
<span class=
Troy and Diane got party poppers in place of traditional fireworks they set off in China. The kids had so much fun. I love this picture of the kids in action.
<span class=
Shane was in his glory with these fun little things.
<span class=
Emma was a little on the nervous side. She wasn't so sure what was going to happen.
<span class=
The kids had so much fun!
<span class=
What a great night of fun celebrating the Chinese New Year.
<span class=
And here is the gang! What a bunch of kids! We can't wait to spend more time with these wonderful families in the months and years to come!
